New Delhi/Guwahati: Pradyut Bordoloi, Lok Sabha MP from Assam’s Nagaon, resigned from the Congress party on Tuesday and joined the BJP on Wednesday in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma and Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia. This is being considered a big blow for the Congress, because assembly elections are going to be held in the state on April 9. Pradyut Bordoloi had sent his resignation to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. In his resignation letter, he wrote, ‘With a heavy heart, I tender my resignation from all posts, privileges and primary membership of the Congress.’
‘I was suffocating in Congress’
On resigning from Congress and joining BJP, Pradyut Bordoloi said, ‘There is no single reason for this. I was being suffocated, and I was being insulted. Assam CEC meeting was held on 13 March. I came to know that a communal leader like Imran Masood said that the candidate against whom I had given evidence of criminal nexus, and against whom I was speaking, was all false and fabricated. In the presence of the top leadership of the party, Imran Masood dared to say that whatever Pradyut Bordoloi said was fabricated. The APCC President present there remained silent. This made me very sad.
Will BJP give ticket to Bordoloi?
Responding to this, Himanta Vishwa Sharma said, ‘Current Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi has joined BJP. His history with Congress dates back to 1975. His joining BJP will strengthen the party. We all welcome him to the party. The Assam unit of BJP will recommend to the central leadership that he should contest the assembly elections. There is no reason for any self-respecting person to remain in Congress. Our aim is to bring more Congress leaders into the party.
Congress suffered a second big blow
Let us tell you that Pradyut Bordoloi has been a cabinet minister in the state and has been elected Lok Sabha MP from Nagaon twice. His son Prateek Bordoloi is contesting the assembly elections from Margherita seat as a Congress candidate. Let us tell you that this is being considered as the second consecutive big blow for the Congress in Assam, because some time ago, former Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Bora has also joined BJP. Bordoloi’s joining BJP just before the elections can create a stir in the politics of the state.
