Once again the cry of small cheetah cubs is echoing in the Kuno National Park located in Sheopur, Madhya Pradesh. This time the female cheetah ‘Jwala’ who came from Namibia has given birth to 5 cubs. Jwala has become a mother for the third time after the birth of Kuno. While sharing the video of the cubs, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav wrote on Instagram, ‘Good news again from Kuno… Cheetah Jwala has given birth to 5 cubs, which is a big achievement for Project Cheetah.’
Now the number is 53
Chief Minister Yadav further wrote that with the addition of 5 cubs, the population of cheetahs in India has crossed the 50-year mark and has reached 53. Jwala and her cubs are healthy. A team of doctors is taking care of him in Kuno. Earlier in February, mother cheetah Asha and Gamini had given birth to 5 and 3 cubs respectively. Since 2023, 44 cubs have been born in Kuno, out of which 33 are alive.
20 leopards were brought from African countries in 2022-2023
In September 2022, 8 leopards (5 females, 3 males) were brought from Namibia and in February, 2023, 12 leopards were brought from South Africa. Then for the first time in March 2023, 4 cubs were born. More than 15 leopards also died during this period. In the year 2025, with the birth of 12 cubs, there will be 30 leopards. In February this year, 9 leopards arrived from Botswana. After this, with the birth of 13 cubs the number has increased to 53.
