What is the news?

An old research satellite of space agency NASA is now returning towards Earth. This spacecraft named Van Allen Probe A is about to enter the Earth’s atmosphere after staying in space for about 14 years. Scientists say that most of the satellite will burn as soon as it enters the atmosphere. However, some small pieces of it may survive, which may later fall on the earth’s surface.

What is Van Allen Probe A?

Van Allen Probe A was launched by NASA in August 2012 along with Van Allen Probe B. The main objective of this mission was to study the radiation belt present around the Earth. These belts contain high energy charged particles which remain trapped in the Earth’s magnetic field. Their study helps scientists understand space weather and its effects on satellites, astronauts and technology.

Satellite coming down due to solar activity

Scientists believe that due to increased solar activity in recent times, this satellite started coming down quickly. Due to solar activity, the Earth’s upper atmosphere heats up and expands. Due to this, there is more friction on the satellites in orbit and they slowly start falling down. For this reason, the height of Van Allen Probe A kept decreasing and now it is returning towards the Earth.

Possibility of entry as per Indian time on 11th March morning

According to the US Space Force, this satellite can enter the Earth’s atmosphere around 05:15 am Indian time on March 11. However, the timing may change slightly as new data is received. Scientists estimate that most of the remaining debris will fall into the ocean, because about 70 percent of the Earth is covered in water. Therefore, the threat to populated areas is considered to be very low.
