Voting took place today for 11 Rajya Sabha seats from 3 states of the country. The results will also be declared shortly. Actually, this time elections were to be held for 37 seats of Rajya Sabha, out of which 26 candidates have already been elected unopposed. Today, the three states where voting took place for Rajya Sabha include 5 seats in Bihar, 2 seats in Haryana and 4 seats in Odisha. There are 6 candidates in the fray for 5 seats in Bihar, 3 candidates for 2 seats in Haryana and 5 candidates for 4 seats in Odisha.
Real battle on 5th seat
Five candidates including Nitish Kumar and Nitin Naveen are in the fray from NDA. The victory of Nitish Kumar, Ramnath Thakur, Nitin Naveen and Upendra Kushwaha is considered almost certain. But the real battle is on the 5th seat, where NDA’s Shivesh Kumar Ram and Grand Alliance’s Amarendradhari Singh alias AD Singh are face to face.
Fight for fourth seat in Odisha
Amidst the fear of cross voting, 3 Congress MLAs and one RJD MLA in Bihar did not turn up to cast their vote. In Haryana, all the equations seem to have changed because of independent candidate Satish Nandal. If 9 MLAs cross-vote, then Congress’s mathematics may get spoiled, hence before voting, Congress had gone to Himachal with its MLAs. The victory of two BJP candidates and one BJD candidate is certain in Odisha. The fight is for the fourth seat. If 8 Congress MLAs cross-vote in Odisha, then the matter may change there also.
Elections every 2 years
Let us tell you that on one hand, the tenure of Lok Sabha is 5 years and it can also be dissolved, while Rajya Sabha is a permanent house, that is, it never stops functioning. The tenure of each member of the Rajya Sabha is six years, but the tenure of all members does not start or end at the same time. Instead, one-third of the members retire every two years. When their terms expire, elections are held to fill those seats. This system ensures that the House always has experienced members and its functioning continues smoothly.
