Complaints are being heard from all cinemas that people are not coming to theatres, budgets of movies have increased and producers are losing money. Some producers have been accusing the distributors that OTTs are directly preventing people from coming to the theaters while piracy is indirectly affecting the movies. There are examples of movie theater owners and distributors losing money by coming to OTT even months before the release of star actors’ movies, for this reason the neighboring Telugu film industry has taken an important decision.

The Telugu Cinema Chamber, Producers’ Association has taken a disciplinary condition that any Telugu movies to be produced henceforth should be released in OTT eight weeks after their theatrical release. Around 40 movie distributors, exhibitors and producers have met and decided to impose control over OTT release of movies.

The executive committee of the Telugu Film Chamber has announced the decision, the producers and other members of the committee have also agreed to the decision, and it has been ordered that the Telugu movies to be produced from now on must be released in OTT eight weeks after their theatrical release. Prominent producers of Telugu cinema like Dil Raju, Suresh Babu, Sunil Narang, Tagore Madhu and many more were involved in this meeting.

This rule will not apply to the movies that are currently being produced, the movies that have completed 60% shooting, but this rule will be applicable to the Telugu movies that will be produced in the future. This rule is already in force in Bollywood. In Tamil Nadu there is a rule of four weeks but there are examples of some movies breaking this rule. It can be released in OTT only after six weeks in Malayalam cinema. There is no specific rule in Kannada.
