Opposition preparing to bring no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla

What is the news?

The uproar in the budget session of Parliament continued on Monday over the unpublished book of former Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane and the India-US trade deal. The opposition is demanding the speech of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, while Speaker Om Birla is asking for discussion as per rules. In view of this, the Lok Sabha was adjourned twice on Monday. Angered by this, the opposition is planning a no-confidence motion against the speaker.

Proceedings started at 11 am, adjourned twice without discussion

The Speaker started the proceedings of the Lok Sabha at 11 am and asked to raise questions during Question Hour. Meanwhile, the MPs remained adamant on the demand for discussion, after which the Speaker adjourned the proceedings till 12 noon. At 12 noon, presiding Krishna Prasad Tennetti took the name of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor to discuss the Union Budget. Then the demand for Rahul Gandhi’s speech arose and Tennetti adjourned the proceedings of the meeting till 2 o’clock.

Opposition angry, made many allegations against the speaker including discrimination

Opposition MPs have accused Lok Sabha Speaker Birla of partisan conduct and cited several reasons for bringing a no-confidence motion against him. MPs claim that the Speaker’s decisions have consistently been in favor of the government, leaving little opportunity for the opposition to influence the proceedings. The MPs accused the opposition’s women MPs of feeling humiliated and expressed displeasure over repeatedly not giving the Leader of the Opposition an opportunity to speak.
