New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a blog on ‘Kashi Tamil Sangamam’ in which he has highlighted the cultural unity of India from Kashi to Rameshwaram. PM Modi has deeply highlighted Tamil culture and tradition and linked it to the national consciousness. PM Modi wrote in his blog:
‘Just a few days ago, I got the opportunity to participate in the Somnath Swabhiman festival at the holy land of Somnath. We are celebrating this festival on the completion of one thousand years of the first attack on Somnath in the year 1026. People from every corner of the country reached Somnath to witness this moment. This is proof that while the people of India are deeply connected to their history and culture, the courage to never give up is also a major feature of their lives. This feeling also binds them together. During this programme, I also met some people who had earlier come to Somnath during the Saurashtra-Tamil Sangamam and had also visited Kashi during the Kashi-Tamil Sangamam. His positive thinking regarding such forums impressed me a lot. So I decided why not share some of my thoughts on this topic.
During an episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ I had said that I am very sad for not learning Tamil language in my life. It is our good fortune that for the last few years, our government has been continuously engaged in making Tamil culture more popular in the country. This is going to further strengthen the spirit of ‘One India, Best India’. Sangam has great importance in our culture. From this aspect also, Kasi-Tamil Sangamam is a unique effort. While this shows the amazing harmony between the diverse traditions of India, it also shows how we respect each other’s traditions.
Kashi can be said to be the most suitable place for organizing Kashi Tamil Sangamam. This is the same Kashi, which has been the pivot of our civilization since time immemorial. People have been coming here for thousands of years in search of knowledge, meaning of life and salvation. Kashi has a very deep connection with Tamil society and culture. Kashi is the city of Baba Vishwanath, while Rameshwaram pilgrimage is in Tamil Nadu. Tenkasi of Tamil Nadu is called Kashi of the South or South Kashi. Pujya Kumaragurupara Swamiji, through his scholarship and spiritual tradition, had established a strong and lasting connection between Kashi and Tamil Nadu. The great son of Tamil Nadu, the great poet Subramaniam Bharati also saw a wonderful opportunity for intellectual development and spiritual awakening in Kashi. It was here that his nationalism became stronger and his poems got a new edge. It was here that his concept of independent and united India got a clear direction. There are many such examples, which show the deep close relationship between Kashi and Tamil Nadu.
In the year 2022, Kashi-Tamil Sangamam was started on the soil of Varanasi. I had the privilege of attending its inauguration ceremony. Then writers, students, artists, scholars, farmers and guests from Tamil Nadu had visited Prayagraj and Ayodhya along with Kashi. This initiative was further expanded in subsequent events. Its objective was that new topics should be added from time to time in Sangamam, new and creative methods should be adopted and there should be maximum participation of people in it. The effort was that this event should continue to move forward while remaining connected to its original spirit. The second event in 2023 used technology extensively to ensure that language did not become a barrier. In its third edition, special focus was kept on Indian Knowledge System. Along with this, large participation of people was seen in educational dialogues, cultural presentations, exhibitions and dialogue sessions. Thousands of people became a part of them.
The fourth edition of Kasi-Tamil Sangamam began on December 2, 2025. The theme this time was very interesting – Tamil Karakalam i.e. Learn Tamil…. This gave a unique opportunity to the people of Kashi and other places to learn the beautiful Tamil language. The teachers from Tamil Nadu made it an unforgettable experience for the students of Kashi! This time many more special programs were also organized. The ancient Tamil literary text Tolkappiyam has been translated into four Indian and six foreign languages.
A special vehicle expedition reached Kashi from Tenkasi was also seen. Apart from organizing health camps and digital literacy camps in Kashi, many other commendable efforts were also made. In this campaign, tribute was paid to the great king of Pandya dynasty, Adi Veer Parakram Pandian Ji, who spread the message of cultural unity. During the entire event, exhibitions were set up at Namo Ghat, academic sessions were organized at BHU, as well as various cultural programs.
What made me most happy this time in Kashi-Tamil Sangamam is the enthusiasm of our young friends. This reflects his passion to stay more connected to his roots. This is such a wonderful platform for them, where they can showcase their talent through various cultural programs. Apart from Sangamam, special efforts were made to make the journey to Kashi also memorable. Indian Railways ran special trains to transport people from Tamil Nadu to Uttar Pradesh. During this period, he was greatly encouraged at many railway stations, especially in Tamil Nadu. The journey became more enjoyable with beautiful songs and mutual discussions.

PM Modi has written a blog on Kashi Tamil Sangamam
Here I would like to appreciate our brothers and sisters from Kashi and Uttar Pradesh, who have made a wonderful contribution in making Kashi-Tamil Sangamam special. He left no stone unturned in welcoming and hospitality to his guests. Many people even opened the doors of their homes to the guests from Tamil Nadu. The local administration was also busy round the clock, so that the guests do not face any kind of problem. Being the MP of Varanasi, this is a matter of both pride and satisfaction for me.
This time the closing ceremony of Kashi-Tamil Sangamam was organized in Rameshwaram, in which Tamil Nadu’s son Vice President CP Radhakrishnan was also present. He enriched this program with his thoughts. Emphasizing on the spiritual richness of India, he explained how such platforms further strengthen national unity.
A very deep impact of Kashi-Tamil Sangamam has been seen. Through this, while cultural consciousness has been strengthened, educational discussion and public dialogue has also been greatly promoted. This has further strengthened the ties between our cultures. This platform has taken forward the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat’, hence we are going to make this event more vibrant in the coming times. This is the feeling which has been an important part of our festivals, literature, music, art, food, architecture and knowledge systems for centuries.
This time of the year is considered very sacred for every countryman. People are celebrating many festivals like Sankranti, Uttarayan, Pongal, Magh Bihu with great enthusiasm. All these festivals are mainly dedicated to Sun God, nature and agriculture. These festivals connect people together, thereby deepening the feeling of harmony and solidarity in the society. On this occasion, I convey my best wishes to all of you. I am confident that with these festivals, our common heritage and the spirit of collective participation will further strengthen the unity of the countrymen.
