New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to review the situation in West Asia in the backdrop of the ongoing conflict between Iran, America and Israel and discuss measures to deal with it. In this meeting, short term, medium term and long term measures to ensure continuous availability of essential commodities were discussed in detail. Alternative sources of fertilizers were also considered to ensure continued availability of fertilizers to farmers in future.
Consideration of developing new export markets
Also, several measures were discussed in the meeting to diversify the sources of imports required for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals and other industrial sectors. Plans to develop new export markets in the near future to promote Indian goods were also considered.
Cabinet Secretary gave presentation
The Cabinet Secretary gave a detailed presentation on the global situation and the measures taken so far and to be taken further by various Ministries/Departments of the Government of India. The possible impact on agriculture, fertiliser, food security, petroleum, power, MSME, exporters, shipping, trade, finance, supply chain and other affected sectors and measures to deal with them were discussed in the meeting. The overall macro-economic situation of the country and further steps to be taken were also discussed.
Discussion on food, energy and fuel security
The short-term, medium-term and long-term impacts of the ongoing conflict in West Asia on the global economy and its potential impact on India were assessed. In this context, both immediate and long-term countermeasures were discussed. A detailed assessment was made of the availability of essential needs of ordinary citizens, such as food, energy and fuel security. Short-term, medium-term and long-term measures to ensure continuous availability of essential commodities were discussed in detail.
Alternative sources of fertilizers should also be considered.
The fertilizer requirement of farmers for Kharif season and its possible impact on it was also assessed. Steps taken over the last few years to maintain adequate stocks of fertilizers will ensure timely availability and food security. Alternative sources of fertilizers were also considered to maintain continuous availability in future. It was also ensured that there would be no shortage of power in India with adequate coal reserves available in all power plants.
All parts of the government should work together
The Prime Minister said that this conflict is a constantly changing situation and the entire world is being affected by it in some way or the other. At such a time, every possible effort should be made to ensure that there is minimal impact on citizens. The Prime Minister directed that all organs of the government should work together so that citizens face minimal inconvenience. He also asked to maintain proper coordination with the state governments, so that black marketing and hoarding of essential commodities does not happen.
