Hubli: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident of alleged police brutality against a Mahila Party worker in Hubli, Karnataka. The incident is linked to a video going viral on social media, in which policemen are accused of assaulting a woman and tearing her clothes while arresting her. Commission Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has strongly condemned this incident. He said that if this allegation is proved, it is a serious violation of women’s dignity, personal liberty and right to safety from gender-based violence.
NCW wrote a letter to DGP
The Commission has sent a letter to the Director General of Police, i.e. DGP, Karnataka, in which the following demands have been made:
- If not done yet, file an FIR.
- Conduct an impartial, neutral and time-bound investigation, including examination of video evidence.
- If policemen are found at fault, initiate strict departmental and criminal action against them.
- Ensure medical assistance, psychological support, rehabilitation and compensation to the victim in accordance with law.
- The Commission has sought a detailed action taken report (ATR) within 5 days.

This case happened in Hubli, Karnataka, where a female BJP worker has been accused of stripping and misbehaving. This allegation is against the policemen of Keshavpur police station. According to reports, the police did this on the basis of a complaint by a Congress Municipal Corporation member, which has caused huge anger among BJP supporters. Pictures of the misbehavior with the woman have also been posted on social media. Senior police officers are investigating the matter. According to preliminary information, the woman was detained after a complaint by Congress councilor Suvarna Kallakuntala.
The woman had gone from Congress to BJP
It is being told that the woman with whom this incident happened was earlier a Congress worker and had recently joined BJP. The controversy began over allegations that he helped officials remove names of some voters, leading to clashes between Congress and BJP workers. Police investigation has also revealed that some criminal cases are already registered against the woman. The Police Commissioner is currently at Keshavpur Police Station and is investigating the matter in depth. The incident has increased political tension in the area and both parties are filing complaints against each other.
