Orders have been given to register FIR against three senior Congress leaders in Assam. The Assam Cabinet has directed the police to register a case against senior Congress leaders Debabrata Saikia, Bhupen Kumar Bora and Meira Borthakur for allegedly making ‘objectionable gestures’ towards women during a recent rally.
expressions are very bad
Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma told reporters after the cabinet meeting, “This gesture was a collective insult to the women of Assam. I saw his expressions, they were very bad. No normal leader or gentleman would make such gestures to a woman.” He said the Cabinet has decided to direct the Director General of Police (DGP) to register a criminal case against the Congress leaders under appropriate legal provisions.
Such leaders should be expelled from the party
Earlier, while talking to reporters on the sidelines of a government programme, Sharma had said that Congress should expel former state unit president Bora and Assembly opposition leader Saikia from the party for ‘insulting women’. Borthakur is the state Mahila Congress president and was present along with two other leaders during the rally.
Objectionable gestures were made from above the bus
Sharma had claimed that objectionable gestures were made on top of the bus being used for the Congress’ statewide rally in Guwahati a few days ago. He said that these gestures were made for all Assamese girls and women. “If the party (Congress) does not expel them (Bora and Saikia), I don’t think they will be able to go anywhere. This is a matter of all women, not of any particular caste,” Sharma said.
Instructions to send the video clip to the Women’s Commission
CM Sharma said that he has directed to send the video clip to the Women’s Commission so that cognizance can be taken on this matter. He said, “I cannot even imagine that an opposition leader, a former party president, would make such a gesture, that too when Meira Borthakur (Congress state women’s unit president) was with him.”
Serious allegations were also made against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi.
The Chief Minister expressed surprise at the local media not reporting the incident and claimed that the clip had been sent to him by an acquaintance in New Delhi. Sharma said that in the state cabinet meeting, it has also been decided to hand over the case of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s alleged Pakistani links to the Home Ministry.
He said the “three key actors” in the case are an MP, his British wife and Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. Sharma and the ruling BJP are attacking state Congress chief Gogoi over his wife’s alleged links with Pakistan’s spy agency ISI. According to the Chief Minister, the Cabinet in Saturday’s meeting along with approving the formation of the 8th State Pay Commission also approved the allotment of land for various educational institutions.
