Under the scheme, a person injured in a road accident will get cashless treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh. This means that the patient or his family will not have to deposit any money in the hospital for treatment. The entire expense will be borne by the government. This facility will be valid for 7 days from the day of the accident. If the patient’s condition is not serious, he will receive treatment in the hospital for 24 hours. If the condition of the patient is serious, then this time limit will be 48 hours.

Who will get the benefit of the scheme?

The biggest feature of the scheme is that it will not require any kind of registration, insurance or any other document. Every citizen of the country, irrespective of class or income group, will be able to take advantage of this scheme. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this scheme will ensure that no one loses his life due to lack of immediate treatment after a road accident.

How will the scheme be paid for?

The treatment amount will be paid to hospitals through the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVAF). If the vehicle involved in the accident is insured, the payment will be made from the amount given by the insurance companies. If the vehicle is not insured and is hit by another vehicle and runs away, the government will make the payment to the hospitals from its own funds. To provide financial assurance to hospitals, accepted claims will be settled by the state health agency within 10 days.

In which hospitals will the facility be available?

Under the scheme, cashless treatment facility will be available only in hospitals selected by the government. These hospitals have been selected on the basis of standards set by the government, so that better and safe treatment can be provided. The scheme is linked with the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) 112. That means the victim or anyone present at the scene can directly call 112 for information about the nearest hospital.
