Amidst the tension in the Middle East, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday spoke on phone to the heads of Oman and Kuwait and expressed concern over the attacks on the Gulf countries. Modi had spoken over phone to Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman and Crown Prince of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah. In his talks with both the countries, Modi has discussed the welfare and security of Indians living there.

Strong opposition to attacks on merchant ships

The Foreign Ministry once again expressed concern on Tuesday about the conflict in Iran and the Gulf region. She said that unfortunately, the situation in the region is becoming increasingly serious during the holy month of Ramadan. The ministry said the conflict has spread to other countries, causing destruction and increasing deaths, while normal life and economic activity are at a standstill. He has strongly opposed attacks on merchant ships.

Concern about Indian citizens

The ministry said that approximately one crore Indian citizens live and work in the Gulf region, whose safety and welfare is our top priority. The ministry said India’s trade-energy supply chains pass through this geographical region and any major disruption has a serious impact on the Indian economy. In such a situation, India cannot remain unaware. The ministry said that many Indians have lost their lives or are missing in such attacks in the last few days.

Diplomacy and dialogue reiterated

The ministry reiterated its call for dialogue and diplomacy regarding the incident. Expressing grief over the deaths in the conflict, the ministry said Indian embassies and consulates in the affected countries are in constant touch with Indian citizens and community organizations and all possible assistance is ongoing. The ministry said India will continue to closely monitor the changing situation and take relevant decisions in the national interest.

Prime Minister Modi has spoken to the heads of many countries in the last 48 hours after the conflict in the Middle East started on February 28. He has spoken to the leaders of the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait and Qatar.
