There was an uproar over this comment

There has been a lot of uproar over the recent statements of Himanta Vishwa Sharma. Last week, he had described Congress as a sympathizer of Bangladeshi infiltrators and said that it should clarify whether it stands with the Assamese people or the ‘Mian’ community. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a government program in Golaghat, he said, “Congress should make it clear whether it stands with the Assamese people or with the ‘Mian’ community. ‘Mian’ refers to people who came from Bangladesh. ‘Mian’ is originally used for Bengali-speaking Muslims in Assam. Non-Bengali speaking people generally consider them to be Bangladeshi immigrants.

Sharma said the ‘Mians’ were initially settled in western parts like Barpeta and Dhubri near the Bangladesh border, but have now reached Duliajan and Margherita towns located on the eastern edge of Assam. The Chief Minister said, “How will we survive?” They have grabbed 10 lakh acres of land. Where will we go?” He said, ”People will question Congress whether they are with ‘Mian’ or with ‘Assamese’ people.”

Controversy regarding video

Himant Vishwa Sharma also got embroiled in controversies regarding a video. The BJP’s Assam unit had posted a video on social media ‘X’, which purportedly showed Sharma aiming and firing at two people with a rifle. In the purported video, one person is wearing a cap and the other has a beard and the caption reads ‘point blank shot’.
