Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, for the first time on Thursday gave a statement on the arrest of Indian Youth Congress (IYC) workers. He wrote on X that today in India, under the rule of a ‘compromised Prime Minister’, peaceful protest has been made the biggest crime. He said that if today we raise our voice against the government in a constitutional manner, then lathi charge, lawsuit and jail are almost certain. He reminded that this is India, not North Korea.
Democracy is being pushed in the wrong direction – Rahul
Congress leader Rahul wrote, ‘The world’s largest democracy is gradually being pushed in a direction where dissent is considered treason and asking questions is considered a conspiracy. Think – no matter what the issue is, if you raise your voice against the government in a constitutional manner, then lathi charge, lawsuit and jail are almost certain. He wrote, ‘What kind of democracy is this, where a compromised Prime Minister is afraid of questions? Where suppressing dissent is becoming the nature of governance?
Rahul counters Centre’s action after public protest
Recalling some incidents in his post, Rahul wrote that the youth affected by the paper leak were lathicharged, women wrestlers were defamed, the protest of a rape victim was stopped, IYC youth were arrested calling them anti-nationals, poisonous air was termed as politics, farmers were lathicharged and tribals were suspected. Rahul wrote, ‘Modiji, this is not North Korea, this is India. When power starts considering itself a nation and dissent as an enemy, then democracy dies.
