Tawang: Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju fiercely attacked Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. He said that Rahul Gandhi is not interested in the smooth functioning of Parliament and some non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have taught him that “good days” will come for his party, that is why he is disrupting the House. Rijiju also said that the government will not take any further steps to “persuade” the Congress to calm the situation in Parliament as they have made several efforts at their level to ensure smooth functioning of the House but to no avail.
Their seats will be reduced in the next elections
“Rahul Gandhi has no interest in the proceedings of the House,” he said in an interview here. They are only interested in making issues. Some NGOs have taught Rahul Gandhi that your time will come, but their time will not come. Their seats (in the Lok Sabha) will be further reduced in the next elections. Rijiju is on a tour of his Lok Sabha constituency Arunachal West.
Congress is completely frustrated
He said the ruling coalition has no problem with the opposition disrupting the House and has made several attempts to defuse the situation, including talking to senior Congress leader KC Venugopal and some others. “We will not do anything extra to convince the Congress,” he said. Congress is desperate because the party is continuously losing elections. They are desperate to change the situation.
The entire opposition is not with Congress
The Union Minister claimed that Congress is under pressure from smaller parties in Parliament not to disrupt the House as it wastes their speaking time. He said, “The entire opposition is not with the Congress. Small parties are not able to utilize the time of their respective parties properly. Small parties are unhappy with Rahul Gandhi. Some of them have not even signed the resolution against the Speaker.
Rijiju said that some members of other political parties were continuously telling him that they wanted the functioning of the House to continue. There was disruption and adjournment in the Lok Sabha for most of the days of the first part of the budget session. Actually, Rahul Gandhi wanted to make his point by citing an article based on excerpts from the “unpublished memoirs” of former Army Chief MM Naravane, on which the Speaker of the Lok Sabha interrupted him and refused to mention the article. Eight opposition members were suspended for the remaining time of the budget session for indiscipline in the House. The opposition also moved a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to remove him from the post and accused him of discrimination.
The Lok Sabha Speaker last week decided to recuse himself from presiding over the proceedings of the House, hours after the opposition moved a motion to remove him from his post. The budget session of Parliament began on January 28 with President Draupadi Murmu addressing the joint sitting of Parliament. The first phase of the budget session continued till 12 February. The Union Budget 2026 was presented on February 1. The second phase of the session will start on March 9 and will continue till April 2.
