New Delhi: Recently, Rahul Gandhi has been embroiled in controversy over eating tea and biscuits on the steps of Parliament. Now ex-servicemen and other senior officers have demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi for this act. A letter has also been issued for this. It has been said in the issued letter that the Parliament of India holds a unique and high position in our constitutional structure. The dignity of Parliament is not merely a matter of tradition, but an essential element of the constitutional ethos that governs our democracy. The sanctity attached to the chambers of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha applies equally to all areas of the parliamentary complex. This includes stairs, corridors and lobbies. These are not incidental places, but integral parts of Parliament, and the conduct expected in them should reflect the dignity of the institution.

gross disregard for parliamentary rights

It is further said in the letter that in this context the incidents that took place on March 12 are extremely worrying. Despite clearly banning demonstrations or protests within the Parliament complex, the opposition led by Rahul Gandhi flouted the directive. This not only violates procedure but also shows blatant disregard for parliamentary authority and a willingness to put personal political spectacle above the dignity of a constitutional institution. Rahul Gandhi, along with several other MPs, was seen having tea and biscuits on the steps of Parliament, which was completely indecent for members of the country’s highest legislative body.

Parliament stairs are not a place for drama

The ex-servicemen have said in the letter that the steps of Parliament are not a place for political drama. Such conduct within the Parliament premises shows a clear disregard for the norms of decorum. Unfortunately, Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly lowered the level of public discussion and decorum through histrionics both inside and outside Parliament. Rahul Gandhi should apologize to the nation for this behavior and introspect on the approach that led to this behaviour, so that the dignity, authority and institutional sanctity of Parliament is fully protected.
