Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in some parts of the country. In the last two weeks, 43 people died in Himachal Pradesh due to rain, while 37 others are missing. At the same time, two Indian Air Force personnel drowned in a swollen lake in Bhimtal, Uttarakhand on Thursday. The people of Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, also faced the problem of waterlogging in many low -lying areas on Friday. Due to the drainage system, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) had to struggle a lot to extract rain water.
17 people lost their lives from Mandi district
In Himachal Pradesh, the monsoon knocked on June 20 and the state has so far lost Rs 5,000 crore due to cloudburst, sudden floods and landslides. Of the 43 people who lost their lives in the state, 14 died of cloudburst, eight in sudden floods and one died in a landslide, while seven people died. The maximum number of 17 deaths occurred in Mandi district, where a total of 10 incidents of cloudburst, sudden floods and landslides caused havoc on Tuesday.
NDRF team engaged in rescue work
Officials said the search for 31 people missing from Mandi district is still going on. On Friday, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) soldiers saved 65 people stranded in Bharad, Deji, Payala and Rukchui villages after heavy rains. After heavy rains, the roads were damaged due to landslides and rivers are in spate, causing road connectivity to many villages and silt and debris accumulated in people’s homes and fields. Due to heavy rains, more than 150 houses, 106 animals, 31 vehicles, 14 bridges and several roads have been damaged, while 164 cattle lost their lives in various disasters. Five relief camps have been set up for 402 people rescued, out of which 348 are from Mandi alone.

Water supply schemes affected due to rain
The State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) said that 280 roads have been closed for the movement of vehicles including 156 in Mandi, 49 in Sirmaur and 36 in Kullu districts. It said that 332 transformers and 784 water supply schemes have been affected in the state.

The local Meteorological Department has released ‘Orange Alert’, which has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in different parts of the state from Saturday to Tuesday. Officials said on Friday that two Indian Air Force personnel drowned in a swollen lake in Bhimtal amidst heavy rains in another mountainous state of Uttarakhand.

Jurisdictional Pramod Shah said that Prince Yadav (22), resident of Pathankot (Punjab) and Sahil Kumar (23), resident of Muzaffarpur in Bihar, were included in a group of eight Air Force personnel who had gone for a holiday in Nainital. He said that the local people carried out a rescue operation with the police and after about an hour of effort, the bodies of Yadav and Kumar were taken out of the lake.

Chardham Yatra interrupted
The heavy rains in the state have affected life and more than a hundred roads have been closed across the state, which has disrupted the Chardham Yatra. There has been a shortage of food grains in some villages of Uttarkashi district. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami over phone and reviewed the situation of sensitive districts of the state in terms of disaster including Kedarnath Dham in Rudraprayag district.

CM Dhami said in a post on the social media platform ‘X’ that the Home Minister assured that the emergency relief agencies of the Central Government NDRF/ITBP (India Tibet Border Police) etc. are being deployed in view of the seriousness of the situation so that Chardham Yatra is not interrupted and the devotees do not have any kind of discomfort.
