Heartbreaking news came from Telangana. Around 500 stray dogs were brutally killed in Kamareddy and Warangal districts. It was found that a campaign to kill stray dogs was carried out in a village in Kamareddy on January 6, 7 and 8. The village sarpanch and village secretary along with the people searched and killed the stray dogs. After the incident, an NGO named Stray Animal Foundation of India filed an FIR. Initial investigation revealed that during the Panchayat elections, the villagers had told the candidates that they would vote for the one who would kill the stray dogs in the village. All the candidates had promised to eliminate stray dogs.
After winning the elections, when the villagers reminded the Sarpanch of their promise, the Sarpanch issued an order to kill the dogs and in three days, more than 300 stray dogs were killed. In Jagtial district of Telangana also, about 50 stray dogs were killed by injecting poison. A video of this murder has surfaced on December 30. In this video it is clearly visible that a person is standing with an injection of poison in his hand. As soon as the dog comes close to him, he gives it a poisonous injection. After being injected, the dog goes a few meters away and falls. Within a few minutes the dog dies in agony.
The way stray dogs were killed by poisoning in Telangana is barbarity. Taking the lives of dumb animals cannot be a solution. Even during the hearing in the Supreme Court, an attempt was made to silence those who raised the voice of voiceless dogs. When a lawyer suggested that adopting stray dogs could be a way out, the judge said why not talk about adoption of orphan children? When the question of atrocities on stray dogs was raised, the judge said that if we play the video, we will know what happens to humans.
When it was suggested that sterilization was a way out, it was commented that now all that is left is counseling of the dogs. I think this approach will be of no use. The suggestions of those who raise the voice of the voiceless should be heard and solutions should be considered instead of seeing this issue as a conflict between man and animal. (Rajat Sharma)
