The government has taken a tough stance regarding AI videos and deepfake content on social media. Now social media companies will have to remove that AI content within three hours, which the government will ask to remove. Apart from this, it will now be the responsibility of social media companies to label the content posted on their platforms. If someone posts AI content, then social media companies will have to clearly write on it that it is AI-generated content. Strict action will be taken against companies which do not do so. The government on Tuesday released the updated version of the Information Technology Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code rules.
In this, the government has asked social media companies to clearly flag synthetic, deepfake and AI -generated content, to clearly label them, if the government or court orders to remove any such content, then it will have to be removed within three hours. Earlier this time limit was 36 hours. These new IT rules of the government will come into effect from February 20. Social media companies will have to ensure that no illegal or fake and forged documents, content exploiting children, content containing explosive material or imitating anyone is circulated on their platforms, otherwise strict action will be taken.
The government’s decision against DeepFake content is good. This was necessary. I myself am a victim of DeepFake content. Sometimes medicines are sold by using AI generated voice on my videos, and sometimes people are lured to earn manifold profits by investing money. In the last few months, I have got hundreds of such videos removed by taking orders from the court, but by the time the videos were removed, millions of people had watched them. Now fake AI content will have to be removed within three hours. This will save many people from being cheated. (Rajat Sharma)
