Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were presented in Manhattan Federal Court in New York. Both of them had handcuffs on their hands. In the court, Maduro said that I am still the President of my country, I am innocent, I have been forcibly taken from my home and brought here. Flores said, I am the First Lady of Venezuela and I am innocent. Flores had bandages on his forehead and temples. The judge told both of them that they would get a chance to express their full views later. The next hearing in this case will be held on March 17. Lawyers for Maduro and Flores are set to petition for his bail, as well as demand access to the Venezuelan embassy.
At an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, the ambassadors of Russia, Iran, France, Denmark and Colombia condemned the kidnapping of Maduro and his wife by US forces, while the US representative said that there are serious allegations against Maduro of involvement in drug trafficking. President Maduro has been accused of drug trade, terrorism and conspiracy against America. Overall, this seemed less like Maduro’s appearance in court and more like a display of American power. After kidnapping Maduro from his bedroom, President Donald Trump made it clear that now his eyes are on Colombia, Cuba, Greenland and Mexico. America’s Vice President J. D. Vance said that America wants to dominate the Western Hemisphere and will continue to do so.
Trump is in high spirits after kidnapping Nicolas Maduro through military action. Now they want to scare all the countries of the world on the basis of America’s military and economic power. That is why when Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was presented in the court in New York, he was paraded in front of the whole world like a common criminal. The security personnel dragged him inside the court premises. America is trying to show that Maduro is not the President of Venezuela but a big criminal who should be treated this way. At the same time, there is an atmosphere of chaos in Venezuela. Maduro’s supporters are protesting for his release while his opponents are celebrating Maduro being taken to the US. The common people of Venezuela feel that now the situation in their country will worsen. There will be shortage of essential goods. That’s why thousands of people are standing in queues throughout the night to buy goods of daily needs.
Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has taken over as President of Venezuela. After taking oath, the new President has proposed to cooperate with America. Delsey was the Vice President of Venezuela for the last 7 years and is considered close to Nicolas Maduro, but as soon as Delsey took command of Venezuela, Trump threatened him too. Trump said that all the countries of North America and South America should accept the dominance of America, the new President of Venezuela should accept all the conditions of America, run her government according to the instructions of America, otherwise her consequences will be worse than Nicolas Maduro.
After Venezuela, Trump now has his eyes on its neighboring country Colombia. Trump also threatened Colombia with military action. Trump has said that Colombia’s President Gustav Petro is a drug dealer, he supplies drugs from Colombia to America, but now Gustav Petro’s days are over. In fact, Trump is trying to implement a nearly 200-year-old policy of America’s fifth President James Monroe. James Monroe had said that North and South America are the territories of the United States and America will not tolerate the interference of any other country in it. Now after 200 years, Trump is saying that his country is free to do anything in North and South America, he will intervene in any country he wants, topple the government there, form a new government, send the army and will not tolerate the interference of any non-American country. Under this policy, Trump is targeting all those countries of Latin America where there are governments opposing Trump’s policies.
Apart from Colombia, Trump has also threatened Cuba, Mexico and Panama. Trump wants to take control of the Panama Canal, although this canal connecting the Pacific and Atlantic oceans belongs to Panama. America’s enmity with Cuba is more than 65 years old, when Fidel Castro took power in Cuba after the communist revolution and expelled American companies from Cuba. Therefore, after kidnapping the Venezuelan President, Trump said that now Cuba’s turn is also going to come because Cuba was completely dependent on Venezuela. But now Cuba’s supply line has stopped. Therefore, the Cuban government will fall on its own, America will not need to send troops there.
The biggest opposition to America’s action in Venezuela is taking place in America’s neighboring country Mexico. Thousands of people are protesting against America in Mexico. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has also joined the protest march against America. That’s why Mexico is also Trump’s target. Trump has said that the drug mafia is in power in Mexico and its President Claudia is afraid of the drug mafia, hence military action is necessary in Mexico.
The most surprising thing is that Trump has now started threatening America’s oldest friendly countries. Trump has said that he will take control of Greenland, the world’s largest island, within the next two months. Greenland, near the North Pole, is currently part of Denmark. Denmark is a member of NATO. America also has the responsibility to protect Denmark from any attack, but now Trump himself is threatening to attack and occupy Greenland.
Actually, there are two reasons behind Trump’s threat. One, America is eyeing the natural resources of Greenland, second, Trump feels that the North Pole is dominated by Russia and China, European countries cannot compete with both of them, in such a situation, if Greenland remains under the control of America, it will help in countering Russia-China. By the way, US Army base is already present in Greenland. Yet Trump has threatened to continue occupying Greenland.
Denmark has expressed strong objection to this statement of Trump. Denmark said that this threat of America will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The whole world is astonished that America kidnapped the President of another country overnight. Does international law allow this?
Now America wants to run Venezuela. Two types of things are being said in the American media. One, America is interested in Venezuela’s oil reserves. America does not want Venezuela to sell its oil in any currency other than dollars. America did not like China selling oil in yuan and Venezuela is not the first country that had to suffer the consequences of not selling oil in petrodollars. Iraq and Libya also tried to do the same. The world saw the fate of Saddam Hussein and Gaddafi. Today, when Maduro was presented in the court in handcuffs, it became clear what would be the end of Maduro, but the big question is whether the people of Venezuela will accept that a foreign power should control their country? Would the people there want Venezuela’s resources to be used to strengthen the United States rather than for their own welfare? (Rajat Sharma)
