SC rejects suggestion to stop all construction work in Delhi amid air pollution

A hearing was held today in the Supreme Court regarding the increasing air pollution in Delhi-NCR. Amid increasing air pollution, the Supreme Court has rejected the suggestion to stop all construction work in Delhi. The Supreme Court said, ‘A large number of people will be affected by this. Instead of taking such steps, we have to think of long-term solutions. CAQM takes appropriate steps according to the pollution situation.

Court asked these states to give suggestions

The court has asked the central government to hold a meeting with the governments of Punjab, Haryana, UP and Rajasthan and give suggestions on long-term solutions. One day’s time has been given for this. Now this matter will be heard on Wednesday, November 19.

Court asked for affidavit

Along with this, the court also sought an affidavit regarding whether the equipment being used to monitor pollution in Delhi is capable of this. The Supreme Court has asked the Delhi government to file an affidavit regarding the quality of air quality index (measuring AQI) devices in the National Capital Region. During the hearing, amicus curiae Aparajita Singh told the court that the machines installed to measure AQI in Delhi can take readings only up to a maximum of 999.

3 out of 10 deaths in Delhi due to air pollution – Lawyer

Senior Advocate Gopal Shankaranarayanan said that air pollution has already increased this year. Sankaranarayanan said that we react to deaths in terrorist incidents. Lakhs of people are dying here due to pollution. There has been an alarming increase in lung cancer. 3 out of 10 deaths in Delhi are due to air pollution. Currently an AQI above 450 is called a GRAP trigger. Whereas, AQI more than 200 is dangerous. Once PM 2.5 enters a child’s lungs, it will never come out. EPCA and CAQM are not capable of dealing with this and strong action is needed.

The havoc of air pollution continues

Air pollution continues to wreak havoc in the national capital Delhi and its surrounding areas. According to data at 5 am on Monday, the average air quality index (AQI) of the city was recorded at 359, which falls in the ‘very poor’ category.

AQI reached 427 in Bawna

According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, the AQI in several areas like Bawna reached 427, which is ‘severe’ level. By afternoon, slight improvement in air quality was seen at some places, but the overall situation remains worrying.
