New Delhi: Seat sharing between the Congress and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is almost finalized. According to sources, DMK has offered 28 assembly seats and one Rajya Sabha seat to Congress. Seat sharing between the two parties has been decided after senior Congress leader P Chidambaram’s talks with DMK President and Chief Minister MK Stalin. However, no formal announcement has been made yet.
Congress had contested on 25 seats in the last elections.
Congress had contested 25 assembly seats out of 234 seats in Tamil Nadu in the 2021 elections. Out of which Congress won 18 seats. This time Congress was demanding at least 30-39 seats and two Rajya Sabha seats. However, after talks between the leaders of both the parties, the final consensus has been reached. The Congress high command wants to continue the alliance with DMK.
On how many seats will DMK contest?
Let us tell you that there are 234 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu. Out of these, Congress will contest elections on 28 seats. DMK and Kamal Haasan’s party will contest the remaining 206 seats. However, the number of seats that actor Kamal Haasan-led Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) will get has not been decided yet.
There was an hour long meeting with Stalin.
A Congress source said that in the meeting with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) President Stalin on Wednesday that lasted for about an hour, Congress leaders discussed various issues related to both the parties. Both the parties wanted to continue the alliance, but there was a difference of opinion regarding the number of seats being given to Congress. Initially the DMK had offered one Rajya Sabha seat to the Congress, but the talks hinged on how many seats would be offered to the party in the assembly elections. Congress had demanded 39 seats in the assembly.
