Ricky Andrew J, Lok Sabha MP from Shillong parliamentary constituency of Meghalaya and senior leader of Voice of the People Party (VPP). Singkon died on Thursday evening. Party officials said that 54-year-old Singkon suddenly collapsed on the field while playing football (futsal), after which he died shortly after.
According to the information received, Ricky Singkon was playing a friendly futsal (short form of football) match with friends in Mawlai Maviong area of Shillong on Thursday evening. During the game, he suddenly fell on the court and became unconscious. He was immediately taken to the nearby Mawiong Community Health Centre, from where he was referred to Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital for better treatment. Doctors at the hospital declared him dead at around 8:45 pm. Doctors believe that he died due to cardiac arrest.
Big name in Meghalaya politics
Ricky Singcon had registered a historic victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He entered Parliament for the first time by defeating veteran Congress leader Vincent Pala by a huge margin of votes. He was not only a politician but also a professor and was known among the public for his simplicity and work at the grassroots level.
Chief Minister expressed grief
As soon as the news of the sudden demise of the MP spread, there was a wave of mourning in the state. Expressing deep grief, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said, “I am shocked by the news of the sudden demise of MP Ricky Singkon. He was a dedicated public representative who worked tirelessly for the welfare of the people. His passing is a great loss to the state.”
