Justice Yashwant Verma got a shock from the Supreme Court

What is the news?

Allahabad High Court Judge Yashwant Verma, caught in the case of cash being found inside his house, got a big blow from the Supreme Court on Thursday. A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and SC Sharma rejected Justice Verma’s demand to extend the deadline to appear before the inquiry committee constituted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The bench said that Justice Verma will have to appear before the committee on January 12.

Decision reserved on the petition

The Supreme Court on Thursday was hearing the petition filed by Justice Verma, in which he has demanded the cancellation of the 3-member committee constituted by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. The Speaker has constituted a committee under the Judges (Inquiry) Act for the impeachment of Verma. The court has reserved its decision in this petition. However, their demand to extend the deadline was rejected. The committee has sought a written reply from Verma by January 12.

The impeachment motion was accepted in August last year

In August, the Lok Sabha Speaker had initiated the formal process of removing Justice Verma from the post of judge by constituting a committee to investigate the case. Earlier, in the internal investigation of 3 judges constituted by the Supreme Court, the judges were found guilty and their removal from the post was recommended. After this, the Center presented an impeachment motion against the judge in the Parliament and the Speaker accepted the motion signed by 146 MPs.

What is the matter of getting cash?

On March 14, a fire broke out in the store room of the official residence of Justice Verma, when he was a judge of the Delhi High Court. In Verma’s absence, his family called the fire-police. After extinguishing the fire, the team found a huge amount of cash from the house. When the then CJI Sanjeev Khanna came to know about this, he called a collegium meeting and transferred Justice Verma to Allahabad High Court. After this, the Supreme Court constituted an investigation committee, which convicted Justice Verma.
