The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is currently facing a shortage of staff. The Central Government has informed the Lok Sabha that at present more than 2,000 posts are lying vacant in ISRO. This information has come out at a time when India is planning to launch the Gaganyaan mission and its own space station. Out of total 18,142 sanctioned posts, only about 15,529 employees are employed.
How many posts are vacant?
According to the government, a total of 2,613 posts are vacant in ISRO. These include 1,636 posts in scientific and technical category. Apart from this, more than 900 posts have been declared vacant in the administrative category also. That means about 14 percent posts have not been filled yet. Due to such a large number of vacancies, the pace of missions may be affected. Therefore, the department has decided to speed up the recruitment process soon.
What steps were taken for recruitment?
The Department of Space has informed that the recruitment process for 1,449 posts is already underway. Different stages of selection are going on and it is expected that these posts will be filled by October, 2026. The process for the remaining posts will also be started soon. The government says that in view of the upcoming big missions, appointment of qualified scientists and technical experts is being done on priority.
Work continues on big missions
ISRO is currently preparing for the Gaganyaan mission, under which Indian astronauts will be sent into space. Apart from this, work is being done in collaboration with NASA on NISAR mission. Missions like Chandrayaan-4 and Shukrayaan are also included in the plan. In such a situation, new scientists and engineers will play an important role in the success of these projects. The Government of India says that efforts are on to complete all the missions on time.
