Mysore: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday broke Devaraj Urs’ record of serving as CM for the longest period amid the ongoing tussle with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. He also expressed confidence of completing the full 5-year term, but also said that this decision has to be taken by the Congress high command. Siddaramaiah also talked about changes in the cabinet and said that they will discuss when the high command calls. Let us tell you that Siddaramaiah is the Chief Minister in his second innings. On January 6, he equaled Devraj Urs’ record of 2,792 days and will surpass it on January 7.

‘I did not do politics to break records’

Let us tell you that this record has come at a time when the power tussle in the ruling Congress party has increased. There are rumors of change of Chief Minister in the state, as half the tenure of the government has been completed on November 20. These rumors are related to the alleged ‘power-sharing’ agreement between Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar in 2023. Siddaramaiah said in Mysore, ‘I did not do politics to break records. It’s just a coincidence. I didn’t even know how many years and days Devraj Urs was the Chief Minister. Today, with the blessings of people, I got a chance to equal the record of Devraj Urs. I will break it tomorrow.

‘I don’t know when the high command will decide’

When Siddaramaiah was asked whether he would create another record by completing the full 5-year term, he said, ‘This decision has to be taken by the Congress high command. I don’t know when the high command will decide. But when asked whether he was confident that he would complete his current term and the high command would take a decision in his favour, he replied, ‘I am confident.’ If there was no trust, how could I be the Chief Minister? Everything depends on the decision of the high command. On his meeting with AICC general secretary KC Venugopal in Mysore on Monday, Siddaramaiah said that Venugopal was going from Wayanad to Delhi via Bengaluru and was passing through Mysore. He said, ‘He was in Mysore and I was also here, so we met.’

Know for how many days Devraj Urs was the Chief Minister

Siddaramaiah denied any discussion on cabinet changes. On when the change will happen, he said, ‘Let’s see, when they call me for discussion, then I will discuss.’ Let us tell you that Devraj Urs is considered a symbol of social justice and land reforms in Karnataka. He served as Chief Minister twice, first from 20 March 1972 to 31 December 1977 for 2,113 days, and second from 28 February 1978 to 7 January 1980 for 679 days. Siddaramaiah is the only Chief Minister after Urs who completed 5 years. His first innings lasted 1,829 days from 13 May 2013 to 15 May 2018. It has been 963 days since his second innings from 20th May 2023.

‘I once thought about becoming an MLA’

Siddaramaiah said, ‘I had thought about becoming an MLA at most once. I became an MLA, I got a chance to become a minister, Deputy Chief Minister, leader of the opposition and also became the Chief Minister. I got opportunities and did my job. Devaraj Urs and I are both from Mysore, but from different times. He was from 1972 to 1980. I have been Chief Minister twice till now, from 2013-18 and 2023. Siddaramaiah expressed satisfaction over his political journey and said that serving the people gives him happiness. He said, ‘Politics means providing justice to the poor, Dalits and backward people and working for them.’

Desi chicken feast on Siddaramaiah’s birthday

The Karnataka Chief Minister insisted that he had progressed in politics because of the blessings of the people. Siddaramaiah’s fans celebrated his achievement at many places. They prepared feasts for his favorite ‘Nati Koli’ or desi chicken dishes. When asked if he has become the brand ambassador of ‘Nati Koli’, Siddaramaiah said, ‘I don’t know about it and who else is throwing parties. I am from a village and when relatives came to our village, Nati Koli dishes were prepared. Many people in the village like it, but since I am the Chief Minister, I am getting some publicity.
