The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) program of voter lists has been completed in 6 states and union territories of the country. Important changes have been recorded in the voter lists. All these states have also issued notifications of final voter lists. According to the official release issued by the Election Commission on Saturday, during the amendment process, the names of a large number of ineligible voters have been removed from the lists.

Most names removed in Gujarat

According to the Commission, the maximum number of 68.12 lakh names have been removed from the voter list in Gujarat under SIR. Before SIR, there were a total of more than 5.08 crore voters in the state, which has reduced to 4.40 crore after SIR. In this way, the number of voters there has declined by 13.40 percent. Similarly, names of 34.25 lakh voters were removed in Madhya Pradesh, due to which the number of voters has reduced from 5.74 crore to 5.39 crore.

What was the situation in other states?

According to the Commission, the number of voters in Rajasthan decreased from 5.45 crore to 5.15 crore. There 31.36 lakh names have been removed. Due to deletion of 24.99 lakh names in Chhattisgarh, the number of voters reduced from 2.12 crore to 1.87 crore. In Kerala, after the deletion of 8.97 lakh names, the number of voters came down from 2.78 crore to 2.69 crore and in Goa, the number came down by 1.27 lakh from 11.85 lakh to 10.57 lakh.

What was the situation in the Union Territories?

According to the commission, the number of voters in the Union Territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands reduced from 3.10 lakh to 2.58 lakh with a reduction of 52,364 names, in Puducherry the number of voters reduced by 10.21 lakh to 9.44 lakh after a reduction of 77,367 names and in Lakshadweep from 57,813 with a reduction of 206 names. Remained at 57,607. Similarly, data for West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu will be released later this month.

Officials said the total change is the number of newly included eligible voters minus the number of voters found ineligible. Reasons for deletion of name include death, permanent transfer, multiple registration or other eligibility issues. The process of updating the voter list is ongoing and eligible citizens can still apply for addition, deletion of names or correction of entries.
