The Supreme Court has strongly criticized the distribution of free schemes by political parties across states and expressed concern over its impact on public finances. The Court has said that instead of distributing resources through free schemes, political parties should make well-planned policies that can improve the standard of living of people, such as unemployment allowance schemes. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said, “Such wasteful expenditure will hamper the economic development of the country. Yes, it is the duty of the state to provide resources. But those who are taking advantage of free schemes… is this not something that needs attention?”
The state is running in loss, you are giving free schemes
The Chief Justice further said, “States are running losses, yet giving free schemes. Look, why can’t 25 per cent of the revenue you collect in a year be used for the development of the state?” The Court clarified that this issue is not limited to any one state, but concerns all the states of the country. “We are not talking about any one state, but about all the states. This is a planned expenditure. Why don’t you present the budget proposal and give a clarification that this is my expenditure on the people suffering from unemployment?” Justice Joymalya Bagchi further said.
Supreme Court reprimands for distributing freebies before elections
The Supreme Court has strongly reprimanded the Tamil Nadu government for distributing free schemes before the elections. On Thursday, the apex court said, a strong message will be given to other states on this matter. The court warned that the indiscriminate distribution of ‘freebies’, especially to those who can afford to pay for utilities and services, has created a culture that rewards those who do not work. Chief Justice Surya Kant asked the Tamil Nadu government, ‘If you start giving free food, free electricity and free cycles… then what kind of culture are you creating.’
