New Delhi: Earthquake tremors were felt in Leh, Ladakh in the early morning today. National Center for Seismology (NCS) gave information about this earthquake. In a statement, NCS said that earthquake tremors have been felt in Leh in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The intensity of this earthquake was recorded at 3.7 on the Richter scale. According to NCS, the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km. During this time, people felt mild earthquake tremors while sleeping. However, there has been no loss of life due to this earthquake.
Earthquake shocks in China also
Apart from Leh, earthquake tremors were also felt in India’s neighboring country China late at night. An earthquake of 4.4 magnitude was recorded here in Xinjiang. A 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck Xinjiang, the National Seismological Center said in a statement. According to NCS, the epicenter of this earthquake was also at a depth of 10 km. At present, there has been no information about any kind of damage due to this earthquake. However, shallow earthquakes are generally more dangerous. This is because the seismic waves coming from shallow earthquakes have less distance to reach the surface, resulting in more ground shaking.
Why do earthquakes occur?
In recent times, an increase in earthquake incidents is being seen in many areas of the country and the world. There are 7 tectonic plates within our earth. These plates keep rotating in their place continuously. However, sometimes there is conflict or friction. For this reason, earthquake incidents are seen on earth. Common life suffers the most due to this. Houses collapse due to earthquake, resulting in the death of thousands of people.
What are the earthquake zones in India?
According to geologists, about 59 percent of the total land area of India is considered sensitive to earthquakes. Scientists have divided the earthquake zone in India into 4 parts i.e. Zone-2, Zone-3, Zone-4 and Zone-5. Areas in Zone-5 are considered the most sensitive, while Zone-2 is considered the least sensitive. Our country’s capital Delhi falls in earthquake zone-4. Earthquakes of more than 7 intensity can also occur here, which can cause major devastation. India is prone to earthquakes due to the Himalayan region and some other fault lines (e.g. Kutch, Northeast India) as the Indian Plate is colliding with the Eurasian Plate.
intensity of earthquake on richter scale
The intensity of earthquake is measured through Richter scale. In an earthquake of 4 to 4.9 magnitude on the Richter scale, the items kept in the house can fall down from their place. Heavy goods and furniture can also move in an earthquake of 5 to 5.9 magnitude. The base of the building may crack in 6 to 6.9. Buildings collapse at 7 to 7.9. There is a danger of tsunami in magnitude 8 to 8.9 and causes more devastation. The most severe destruction occurs in 9 or more.
