Ban on NCERT book and digital form

What is the news?

The Supreme Court on Thursday heard the inclusion of the chapter ‘Corruption in Judiciary’ in the Class 8 textbook of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). During this time, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Surya Kant ordered a complete ban on the production and distribution of the book. He said that distribution of the book in physical and digital form would be considered a deliberate violation of the court order. The court has sought information about the authors who wrote the chapters.

Authors who write chapters will not work for the ministry – Government

On behalf of the Central Government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta apologized unconditionally to the court as soon as the hearing began. He said that the 2 persons who have prepared these 2 chapters will never work with the University Grants Commission (UGC) or the Ministry. On this, CJI Surya Kant said that then he will be acquitted, he had fired the bullet… due to which today the judiciary is soaked in blood. CJI said that NCERT has not written ‘apology’ in the statement.

It is a well thought out move – CJI

The Center told the court that currently only 32 books have come in the market and they have been withdrawn. The entire book will be reviewed. To this the CJI said that this is a calculated move and the entire teaching community will be told that the Indian Judiciary is corrupt and the cases are pending…then the students and then the parents. This is a deep conspiracy! Justice Joymalya Bagchi said that some of the material is in digital form and the approach is one-sided.

We will not close the case- CJI

CJI said that the court wants to investigate the matter thoroughly, we have to find out who is responsible for this, we will see who all are involved. The culprits should be punished! Will not close this case. The CJI said that it appears that there has been a systematic attempt to weaken the judiciary and insult its dignity. He said, “If this continues unabated, the sanctity of the judicial office will be tarnished in the tender minds of the youth.”

Government should present the names of writers- CJI

The CJI ordered that all hard and soft copies of the book be removed from retail outlets, schools, digital platforms and accessible to the public and a compliance report be filed. NCERT Director should immediately seize all the books sent to schools and submit compliance report in 2 weeks. Also, the names and identity cards of the members of the National Curriculum Board who have written the objectionable chapter should be presented and the information of the discussion meeting on the objectionable chapter should also be presented.

committee will be formed

The court has asked to list the case after four weeks. After the report is prepared, the court will form a group which will investigate it and find those responsible. The court has also thanked the media for raising the matter.

NCERT had issued a statement after the controversy

NCERT, in its statement released after the controversy, wrote that some wrong text and errors of judgment have inadvertently appeared in the Social Science book for Class 8 on February 24, 2026. The Department of School Education and Literacy directed that the distribution of this book be stopped completely till further orders. NCERT termed the mistake as unintentional and expressed regret.

What is the controversy?

NCERT has placed a section on “Corruption in the Judiciary” in the new Class 8 Social Science textbook under the chapter titled “Role of the Judiciary in our Society”. The chapter outlines the “challenges” faced by the judicial system. This included “corruption in the judiciary” and “huge pendency of cases due to various reasons such as lack of adequate number of judges, complex legal procedures and poor infrastructure”. There is controversy regarding this.
