The first place is former veteran batsman Vijay Hazare. He scored an unbeaten 164 in his first match as a captain in the Delhi Test against the England cricket team in 1951. This century is also the best score in the debut test of any Indian captain.

Sunil Gavaskar (116 runs, 1976)

During the Auckland Test in 1976, Sunil Gavaskar scored 116 runs in his first Test as a captain. There was 12 fours and 1 six from his bat. Due to his innings, India got a strong start in response to New Zealand’s 266 runs. India won this Test by 8 wickets. Gavaskar’s innings proved to be a great start to his captaincy and he was the second Indian captain to achieve this achievement.

Virat Kohli (115 runs, 2014)

In 2014, Virat Kohli played a brilliant innings of 115 runs in his first match as captain in the Adelaide Test against Australia cricket team. He had hit 12 fours while facing 184 balls and brought the team to a strong position in the first innings. Although despite this brilliant century, India lost the match by 48 runs, Kohli left the first impact of his leadership ability with a strong century.

Shubman Gill (147 runs, 2025)

Now Shubman Gill has come in fourth place in this list. In his first Test as captain against England, he scored 147 runs in 227 balls. 19 fours and 1 six came out of his bat. This was the sixth of his Test career and the third century against England. Gill, who retired from Test cricket, came down to bat on number-4 in place of Kohli. He has got the captaincy of the team in place of Rohit Sharma.
