In a departure from recent tradition, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget 2026 on February 1, which is a Sunday. The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs has finalized the budget programme.
The key dates are as follows:
- The budget session of Parliament will start from 28 January 2026 and continue till 2 April 2026.
- The first phase will end on 13 February 2026. The second phase will start from 9 March 2026.
- The Economic Survey 2025-26 will be presented on 29 January 2026.
- The Union Budget 2026-27 will be presented on 1 February 2026.
- Budget presentation on a Sunday is a rare occurrence.
- Although February 1 conforms to tradition established in 2017, it is not a day of the week. This won’t be the first time the Union Budget will be presented on a Sunday, but it is a rare occurrence.
- To ensure allocation of funds by the beginning of the financial year (1 April), the budget date in 2017 was changed from 28 February to 1 February.
