Gangtok: The earth is trembling due to earthquake in Sikkim, a mountainous state located in the north-eastern part of India. Its intensity has been measured at 4.7 on the Richter scale. However, till the time of writing the news, there has been no news of any loss of life or property.
Today the earth trembled in Myanmar also
Today itself there was an earthquake in India’s neighboring country Myanmar. Its intensity was measured at 3.9 on the Richter scale. The depth of this earthquake was 85 kilometers.
Earthquake occurred in Sikkim on Friday also
Earthquake tremors were also felt in Sikkim on Friday. Earthquake tremors started being felt in Sikkim from 1 o’clock in the night, after that the earth trembled due to earthquake several times in different areas.
The first earthquake of magnitude 4.5 was felt in Sikkim at midnight (1:09 am), after which the earth trembled due to earthquake in other areas also. These areas include Gangtok, Mangan, Namchi.
Why do earthquakes occur?
There are tectonic plates within the earth. When these plates collide with each other, it causes an earthquake. Apart from this, there are many reasons for earthquakes.

- 2 to 2.9: Very little detectable
- 3 to 3.9: Heavy vehicles passed nearby, it seems
- 4 to 4.9: Vibration may cause items to fall.
- 5 to 5.9: Heavy items will also be seen shaking
- 6 to 6.9: Crack in the building
- 7 to 7.9: Building may collapse
- 8 to 8.9: Tsunami may occur
- 9 or more: severe destruction and deaths may occur
What to do when an earthquake occurs?
- If you are in any kind of building then try to go out into the open field.
- If you can’t get out of the building, kneel or lie down on the ground so you don’t fall due to vibration.
- Hide under a sturdy table, desk or bed.
- Sit down holding on to something strong so that you remain safe even if it moves.
- Do not run or use stairs/lift. Due to this you may fall and get injured.
