The name of Kerala has been changed. Now it will be called Keralam. This decision has been taken by the Central Government in the Union Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. The proposal to change the name was sent to the Center by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s government, on which the decision has been taken under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Now it will be sent to both the houses of Parliament.

Name will change before elections

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had proposed measures to change the name of the state to ‘Keralam’ in the First Schedule under Article 3 of the Constitution, which was passed in August 2023. He says that ‘Keralaam’ is used in Malayalam and this has been a major demand for the Malayalam speaking communities since the time of the national freedom struggle. Both the party and the opposition in Kerala agree on the proposal.
