New Delhi: Amidst the ongoing tension and war-like situation in West Asia, senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Manish Tewari has supported the foreign policy of the Central Government. He said that India has been a country with a limited role in this conflict and the government’s cautious approach is absolutely right. Manish Tiwari said, ‘It is important to understand that there is not just one war going on in West Asia, but many types of conflicts are going on simultaneously. The situation between Israel, Iran and America is not just regional but related to larger global equations. This is not our fight.

‘…So we’re on the right track’

Tiwari further said, ‘We have always played a limited role in this area. India should maintain its ‘strategic autonomy’. If we take steps thoughtfully and carefully, we are in the right direction. Strategic autonomy means protecting one’s interests and maintaining a balance according to the situation. Let us tell you that another Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has also appreciated the government’s stand on this issue. He wrote in ‘Indian Express’ that this war cannot be justified under international law and is against the principles of sovereignty and non-aggression that India has always supported.

India’s diplomatic efforts intensified

Let us tell you that India has continuously emphasized on ‘negotiation and diplomacy’ during this entire crisis. On one hand, India condemned the attacks carried out by Iran in the Gulf region, while on the other hand it has also intensified diplomatic efforts to ensure oil and gas supplies while strengthening its relations with Tehran. In particular, the Strait of Hormuz, which is very important for about 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas trade, remains strategically important for India.

India has taken balanced steps

It is noteworthy that on February 28, America and Israel together attacked many cities and bases of Iran. In response, Iran launched several attacks on military bases associated with America and Israel in the Gulf region. Amidst all this development, India has given priority to its national interests by adopting a balanced and cautious approach, which has now also got the support of two senior Congress leaders.
