Kolkata: Shatrughan Sinha, MP of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, praised state Chief Minister Nitish Kumar after the bumper election success of NDA in Bihar and congratulated the parties and people associated with him. A round of speculation started in political circles regarding Shatrughan Sinha’s statement praising Janata Dal United (JDU) chief Nitish Kumar on social media platform ‘X’. Whereas Trinamool said that Sinha, a native of Bihar, has personal opinion.
Shatrughan Sinha has been in many parties in his political career. He was a Rajya Sabha member from 1996 to 2008, during which he was also a Union Minister during the tenure of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was elected from Patna Sahib Lok Sabha seat on BJP ticket in 2009. He joined the Congress in 2019 and will again reach the Lok Sabha on a Trinamool ticket in the 2022 by-election from Asansol in West Bengal. Also elected to Parliament from this seat in the year 2024.
What did you say in praise of Nitish?
Shatrughan Sinha praised Nitish Kumar in a post on ‘X’ after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)’s landslide victory in the Bihar Assembly elections and shared several pictures of the two. Kumar’s party is a constituent of the NDA and has won 85 of the 101 seats it contested.
He said, “Congratulations! For the people of Bihar to get the government they deserved and voted for. Congratulations to the most admired, gentlemanly leader Nitish Kumar for being the longest serving, trusted, tested and successful Chief Minister of Bihar. It seems that he has lived up to the expectations of the people.” Sinha (79) said, ”Congratulations to all the people/parties. God bless everyone and congratulations to all. Jai Bihar! Jai Hind!”
What he said is purely his personal opinion.
He tagged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and others in this post. Trinamool spokesperson Debangshu Bhattacharya said that Sinha is from Bihar which might have inspired him to make such remarks. Bhattacharya, head of Trinamool’s IT cell, said, “However, the party will talk to him to find out why he said this.” What he said is completely his personal opinion and not that of Trinamool.
BJP MLA from Asansol South Agnimitra Paul claimed that Sinha has exposed the rift within Trinamool and his resentment towards the top leadership of the party. “Trinamool’s move to bring in someone from outside the state and not related to Asansol backfired as he failed to perform well as MP from the seat,” he claimed.
