A surprising case has come to light from Shivamogga district of Karnataka. A trainee veterinary officer was seriously injured in an attack by a hippopotamus at the Thyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari in the district. A 27-year-old veterinary officer-in-training has died after being injured in a hippopotamus attack. This incident has scared people.

What is the whole matter?

Bengaluru-based Dr Samiksha Reddy was recently appointed as Trainee Veterinary Officer in Safari. He was given the responsibility of monitoring the health of two sick ‘Sun Conure’ birds. She was present in the Veterinary Hospital at around 10:30 pm on Thursday (March 19, 2026). Later, he decided to check the body temperature of a pregnant hippopotamus. While she was checking her temperature with the help of ‘non-invasive infrared thermography’, the animal suddenly attacked her.

There were deep wounds on the body

Dr Samiksha, who was seriously injured in this attack, was admitted by Safari staff to a private hospital in Shivamogga. According to official sources, he suffered deep wounds, excessive bleeding and his liver was also damaged, due to which he suffered cardiac arrest. He died of his injuries around 6:30 am today.

Forest Minister expressed grief

According to officials, Dr Samiksha was undergoing training as a veterinary officer, and she had 45 more days left in her training period. Forest Minister Ishwar Khandre has expressed grief over the death of the veterinary officer and directed officials to ensure strict adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) to avoid such incidents. He has also asked the officials to form a team of officers to investigate the incident and submit a report.
