A tragic incident has come to light from Ramnagar in Nainital district of Uttarakhand. Here, two drivers who were sleeping by lighting ‘Petromax lantern’ in the cabin of the truck to save themselves from the extreme cold, died of suffocation. The deceased have been identified as uncle and nephew, residents of Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh.

According to the information given by the police, Mohammad Irfan and Mohammad Iqrar, residents of Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh, were truck drivers by profession. They had come on Saturday night to fill mineral material (sand-gravel) in a stone crusher located in Peerumdara village of Ramnagar. At around 5:00 am on Sunday morning, he loaded the goods in the truck and parked it outside the crusher. To escape the harsh cold and frost, both of them went inside the cabin of the truck. To keep the cabin warm, he lit a kerosene ‘Petromax lantern’ and slept with the cabin windows completely closed.

Found unconscious after breaking window

When there was no movement in the truck for a long time, other workers working there called out to him. Doubts arose when no response was received from inside. After this, the window glass of the truck cabin was broken, where Irfan and Iqrar were found lying in an unconscious state. They were immediately taken to the government hospital in Ramnagar, where doctors declared both of them dead after examination.

What does the doctor say?

Hospital doctor Dr. Krutika said that based on preliminary investigation, the cause of death appears to be suffocation. He clarified that burning of lanterns in a closed space would have reduced oxygen and filled with poisonous gases like carbon monoxide, due to which this accident occurred. However, the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post mortem report comes.
