The Indus Water Treaty was signed between the World Bank’s mediation between former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the then Pakistani President Ayub Khan in 1960.

Under this, India has authority over 3 Eastern rivers (Ravi, Sutlej, Vyasa) flowing in the Indus Valley, while Pakistan has authority over 3 Western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab).

Rivers flow through India, so India has authority over 20 percent water of western rivers, it uses it in other projects including irrigation.
