PM Modi has expressed displeasure over the NCRT book controversy. According to sources, PM Modi had expressed his displeasure on this topic during the cabinet meeting on Tuesday. He had asked what is being taught to the children. This should be taken care of. It was only after this meeting that PM Modi left for Israel. He is returning on Thursday. In such a situation, action can now be taken against the people responsible. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also promised to fix accountability and take action against those involved in drafting the controversial part of the curriculum. The Union Education Minister also emphasized that the government has full respect for the judiciary and has no intention of disrespecting this institution.
A chapter was included in the Class VIII textbook of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), which talked about corruption in the judiciary. There is controversy regarding this chapter. Referring to the controversial portion of the syllabus, the Supreme Court said that it appears that “a systematic effort has been made” to weaken the judicial institution and denigrate the dignity of the judiciary. Along with this, the apex court imposed a ‘complete ban’ on the NCERT Class 8 Social Science textbook.
Order to confiscate all social science books
The court ordered the seizure of all copies of the book as well as the removal of its digital version. A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant said, “He has committed a crime.” The judiciary has been hurt.” A day earlier, NCERT had apologized for ‘inappropriate content’ in the social sciences textbook and said it would be rewritten in consultation with the appropriate authorities. The bench also includes Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M Pancholi. The bench issued show cause notices to the NCERT director and the secretary of the school education department and asked them to explain why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against those responsible. Reacting to the development, Pradhan said, “I am deeply saddened by what has happened and express regret. There was no intention to insult the judiciary. An investigation will be conducted and accountability will be fixed. Action will be taken against those involved in preparing the chapter. As soon as we received the information, the distribution of textbooks was stopped.”
Government extremely angry over controversial references
The Education Minister told reporters in Jamshedpur, “In a democratic country like India, the judiciary is supreme and we fully respect it. We have taken this issue seriously. The directions of the court will be followed.” NCERT’s Class 8 social science textbook says corruption, high pendency of cases and shortage of judges are among the challenges faced by the judicial system. After the Supreme Court gave a clear warning that it would not allow “anyone on earth” to tarnish the dignity of the judiciary, NCERT removed the textbook from its website. According to sources, the government is extremely angry over the controversial references in the curriculum.
