Prime Minister Narendra Modi held delegation level talks with Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim on the second day of his visit to Malaysia. PM Modi said, “Today our cooperation is deepening in every sector. From agriculture, manufacturing, clean energy, semiconductors to skill development and capacity building. Our defense and security cooperation is also becoming stronger. I congratulate you again on your successful chairmanship of ASEAN. We believe that with the cooperation of Malaysia, our relations with ASEAN will deepen further. The real strength of our relations is the relationship between our people. Nearly 30 lakh Malaysian citizens of Indian origin are part of the vibrant relationship between our two countries. I also had the opportunity to meet you in the diaspora, which was a very special experience. We strongly believe that India and Malaysia are linked to the full potential of our relationship in the diaspora.”
PM Modi made his intentions clear
Expressing his sentiments in simple words, PM Modi said, “The main message of my visit is very clear. India wants to take our relations with Malaysia to new heights and increase cooperation in every possible field.” MoUs were also signed after the delegation-level meeting in Kuala Lumpur, which include areas like health, national security, labor etc. PM Modi said, “Last year, I could not come to Malaysia for the ASEAN Summit, but I had promised my dear friend that I will come to Malaysia as soon as possible. For my first foreign visit of 2026, I have come to Malaysia. India-Malaysia relations are truly special. We are maritime neighbours. For centuries, there have been deep people-to-people ties between our two countries. Today, Malaysia is the second largest country in the world where people of Indian origin live. Our “Civilizations are linked by common cultural heritage and democratic values.”
Partnership will be better in these areas
PM Narendra Modi said, “In the security sector, we will strengthen cooperation in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing and maritime security. We will also make defense cooperation bigger. With AI and digital technology, we will further advance our partnership in semiconductors, health and food security. Malaysian PM praised
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praised India, saying, “India is growing rapidly, which is a great growth in the international economic trade scene and hence Malaysia will definitely benefit a lot in terms of ASEAN if we can find more ways and opportunities to work together with India, so that we can go beyond the $18.59 billion achieved in 2025. A big success is the decision to use local currency as far as possible. We have had a long-standing relationship since 1957. But we have elevated it to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2024. Deep historical ties, strong people-to-people ties, and ever-growing economic cooperation. We will continue to deepen cooperation in all areas. Trade and investment, trade in local currency, connectivity, energy, defence, education, healthcare, tourism, culture and people-to-people ties. This is really comprehensive, and we are confident that we can take it forward and complete it rapidly with the commitment of both our governments. “We have seen the exchange of 11 documents that go beyond the usual bilateral arrangements. We have also covered peacekeeping cooperation on semiconductors, healthcare and security cooperation.”
