On changing the name of Kerala, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said – “Everything is good, no doubt about it, but a small linguistic question for the Anglophones among us: Now what will happen to the words “Keralite” and “Keralan” for the residents of the new “Keralam”? “Keralamite” sounds like a microbe and “Keralamian” sounds like a rare word meaning minkle. After this the government will take further action and the President’s recommendation will be obtained to introduce the bill in Parliament.

The name ‘Keralaam’ will reveal the heritage of the state in its full authenticity and will preserve its glory.”
At the same time, BJP National President Nitin Nabin said – “Under the leadership of PM Modi, the approval of the Union Cabinet to change the name of “Kerala” to “Kerala” is an important step towards respecting the linguistic heritage and cultural identity of the people of Kerala.
