Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has appreciated this decision but has also raised a question.

On changing the name of Kerala, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said – “Everything is good, no doubt about it, but a small linguistic question for the Anglophones among us: Now what will happen to the words “Keralite” and “Keralan” for the residents of the new “Keralam”? “Keralamite” sounds like a microbe and “Keralamian” sounds like a rare word meaning minkle. On Tuesday, the Union Cabinet has approved the proposal to change the name of ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralaam’. After this the government will take further action and the President’s recommendation will be obtained to introduce the bill in Parliament.

The decision of the Union Cabinet under the leadership of Modi ji to change the name of Kerala to ‘Keralaam’ is an important step towards fulfilling the long-standing demand of the people of the state. The name ‘Keralaam’ will reveal the heritage of the state in its full authenticity and will preserve its glory.”
At the same time, BJP National President Nitin Nabin said – “Under the leadership of PM Modi, the approval of the Union Cabinet to change the name of “Kerala” to “Kerala” is an important step towards respecting the linguistic heritage and cultural identity of the people of Kerala. This decision reflects the national resolve to move beyond the remnants of colonial era naming and restore pride in the roots and core traditions of India’s civilization. It reflects the regional aspirations while strengthening the spirit of “Development too, heritage too”. It is a testament to the government’s commitment to respect.”
