What is the story of Valentine?

It is said that in the third century, when a cruel emperor of Rome persecuted those in love, Pastor Valentine disobeyed the emperor’s orders and gave the message of love, hence he was put in jail and hanged. The trend of celebrating Valentine’s Day on 14th February every year started in memory of this saint who sacrificed his life for love.

Why did the king hang St. Valentine?

In fact, Roman Emperor Claudius II had banned marriages in his empire. The king needed an army and believed that unmarried soldiers could prove to be better warriors than married soldiers. People were very sad due to this order of the king. However, St. Valentine believed that love is a gift from God. In such a situation, he started arranging marriages of lovers. He inspired the people to disobey the king’s orders. In such a situation, when the king came to know about this, he imprisoned St. Valentine and on 14 February 269 AD, St. Valentine was hanged.

When did Valentine’s Day start?

Celebrating Valentine’s Day began in the late 5th century. February 14 was established as a feast day in honor of Saint Valentine by Pope Gelasius I. Experts also say that Valentine’s Day was started in place of Rome’s old tradition of ‘Lupercoria’. Valentine became associated with love through the poems of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century.
