New Delhi: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has demanded to stop the Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) imposed on commercial vehicles traveling to and from Delhi. During a program on Wednesday, Gadkari raised questions on the usefulness of this tax and the use of the funds collected in its name.

Said in a program that in the meeting held with the Municipal Corporation (MCD), he had raised the question that where is the green tax being collected in the name of reducing pollution in Delhi being used? Gadkari said, “I asked the corporation what is your contribution towards environmental improvement? The answer I got was – no contribution… then why are you charging this toll?”

Reference to Supreme Court order

When Union Minister Nitin Gadkari talked about stopping this tax, the officials cited the 2015 order of the Supreme Court. On this, Gadkari said that he has requested the Chief Minister of Delhi to stop it immediately. He also suggested that the Delhi government should give Rs 800-900 crore as grant-in-aid to the Municipal Corporation, so that this tax can be completely abolished.

What did you say about the use of funds?

Nitin Gadkari said that when his ministry investigated this fund, it found that the money was not being spent for the purpose for which it was being taken (improvement of air quality). At the same time, the corporation officials admitted that this green fee is very important for them economically.

Referring to the legal basis of the tax, Gadkari said officials cited the Supreme Court order to continue it. He further said that he has sought intervention, so that the Court can reconsider this decision and provide relief to the people facing difficulties due to tax.
