India had to decide how far the border would be – CDS
CDS General Anil Chauhan said, ‘After independence, when the British rule ended, it was in India’s hands to decide where its border would be. Jawaharlal Nehru might have known that in the east we had a base in the form of the McMahon Line and we also had a claim in Ladakh, but the situation was not completely clear. Perhaps that is why he chose the path of Panchsheel Agreement.
China had reached Xinjiang-Lhasa
General Chauhan further said that the situation in China was also different at that time. China had entered Tibet and had access to Xinjiang and Lhasa. This entire area was extremely sensitive from both ends, hence this area got priority. Both countries wanted stability in this area.
Tibet was considered a part of China in 1954
He said, ‘India accepted Tibet as part of China in 1954 and both the countries signed the Panchsheel Agreement. After this, India accepted that most of its northern border had been decided, except that area which was not finalized through formal treaty.
Difference between border and frontier explained
General Chauhan said, ‘Border is a clear political and legal line marked on the map and on the ground, while the frontier is a broad and blurred area, which is shaped by customs, historical contacts and traditions. A border separates two nations, while a frontier is the meeting point of two civilizations.
