Mumbai: Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has added to party national president Mallikarjun Kharge’s sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mallikarjun Kharge alleges that US President Donald Trump is making India accept his conditions on important matters. Referring to the US military action in Venezuela that resulted in the arrest of Nicolas Maduro, the Congress leader asked a question which some on social media considered a joke due to its absurdity: “…Will an incident like Venezuela happen in India too? Will Trump kidnap our Prime Minister?”

Shameful statement for the entire country

Former top Jammu and Kashmir police officer SP Vaid strongly criticized Congress leader Chavan’s statement, saying it was “shameful for the entire country”. Many on social media termed Chavan’s comments as “brain dead”, “illiterate”, “stupid”, etc. and highlighted its absurdity especially in the context of a nuclear powered country like India.

India will have to bear the brunt of this – Chavan

Chavan, who has been the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and a Union Minister in his long career, took up where Kharge left off by attacking Prime Minister Modi over the huge tariffs imposed by the US on India.

Stepping up his attack, Chavan said, “Trade with 50 per cent tariff is not possible at all. In fact, it amounts to stopping India-US trade, especially exports from India to the US. Since direct sanctions cannot be imposed, tariffs have been used to stop trade. India will have to bear the brunt of this. The profits our people used to get from exports to the US will no longer be available. We will have to look for alternative markets, and this Efforts in that direction are already underway.”
